This is a specialist "how to" article on investing on the UK stock market. It is search engine optimised for the internet and written in the third person.

How to Buy Shares - A Guide to Share Dealing
on the UK Stock Market

Discover how to buy shares and make money on the stock market. A step-by-step guide for beginners. PLUS! Free share tips from the experts!

The markets are behaving oddly right now – there is no denying that the US sub prime collapse has shaken things up. But if a private investor is willing to take some calculated risks and follow the advice of the experts, there are still opportunities to make money on the stock market. Here's how…

Step 1 – Open a Share Dealing Account

A basic share dealing account offers just that – the facility to buy shares through the Internet or over the phone. The simplest service is known as “Execution Only”, which means the broker does not provide any advice. They simply execute the trade as per the client's instructions. For instance, buy 1,000 shares in The Hat Company Plc.

Opening a standard trading account is usually free. This needs to be credited with funds from a bank account before trading can begin. Alternatively, open a Stocks & Shares ISA to avoid paying tax on any stock market income within a certain limit. This is more sensible for long-term investing.

Typically, brokers charge £8-£12 per trade (regardless of the size of the trade). Some brokers charge an inactivity fee, so if no trade is placed over a three-month period, a trading fee may be applied anyway. Finding the most affordable broker is easy using a comparison site like Money Supermarket. To compare a list of share dealers and their fees, go here.

Step 2 – Find a Reliable Source of Stock Tips

While some private investors do their own stock research, it's much easier to find a reputable tip sheet or research house that supplies all the ideas. Don't pick stocks randomly (i.e. because they have a nice name) or trust investor bulletin boards (i.e. because someone says “this one's going to be a ten-bagger!”) This is completely unreliable. Remember – the stock market is not random, it moves on fundamental attributes and investor sentiment. Understanding what causes a stock to move is the key to making money.

What is more, a professional research analyst has:

  • understanding of wider market trends
  • knowledge of individual sectors
  • experience analysing financial accounts
  • contact with the management of the stock
  • access to rumours and upcoming deals
  • no emotional bias

That last point is often overlooked. It is easy to become attached to a stock simply because it is deemed to show promise. But if the trend is down, a level-headed investor must know when to cut a loss. Tip sheets can take this procrastination out of the equation.

Free Share Tips

Ready to start trading? Great! Pick a handful of the following links and get acquainted with the market. After that, pick a few stocks and invest a modest amount to start with. Remember: the value of stocks can go down as well as up – so never invest what you can't afford to lose.

Here are some popular providers offering free share tips… Log on to see what they are buying right now.

These tip sheets charge an annual fee but are generally well-regarded with good track records of making money for their readers.

This is an excerpt from an analyst report on a new technology for transporting perishable goods. It is written in an informal B2B copywriting style for print publication.

The Market

There is little need to state that the world population is growing – to just over 6.6 billion at the last count. And for the first time in history, more people live in cities than in the country, creating huge demand for a reliable system that transports food products on long haul journeys around the world.

The incumbent freight systems have been around for decades, making them inefficient and out-dated. Of the 6.3 billion tonnes of food traded each year, around 300 million tonnes is wasted. Such losses are higher for temperature-sensitive foods, such as strawberries (and also medical cargo, such as blood plasma). Around 30% of perishable foods transported by air go straight to the dump due to spoilage. In Australia, it is thought that more than 25% of fresh fruit and vegetables perish between the farm gate and the retailer. And in the developing countries of Africa and South East Asia the losses are likely to be even larger.

While existing technologies have reached their limits and failed to keep up with market demand, this company has a superior, scalable solution based on improved technology. As such, the potential of the distribution of highly perishable foods alone is estimated at 17.3 million units (over NZ$150 billion).

An economic feasibility study into the global hire business found it to be a potentially highly profitable venture. Provided the unit is brought to market in the right form and price range, it has the potential to generate substantial royalties and licences fees internationally.

This is a science-themed article on a rare genetic condition known as Fatal Familial Insomnia. It is search engine optimised for the internet and written in the third person.

The Man Who Never Slept:
The Extreme Lives of People with Fatal Familial Insomnia

Although rare, Fatal Familial Insomnia is a devastating genetic sleep disorder, which strikes during middle age and results in death.

Shortly after his 40th birthday in 1991, Michael Corke, a music teacher from Chicago, began having trouble falling asleep. In the following weeks, the insomnia grew worse and his health rapidly deteriorated. Eventually he couldn't sleep at all.

The doctors were baffled but could do nothing for him. Michael was physically and mentally exhausted, and wanted nothing more than to be able to fall asleep. But his brain wouldn't let him.

Video footage of him appearing at a school orchestra concert showed a weakened, frail old man, nothing like the fit and healthy individual he was just months earlier. Eventually he was admitted to hospital and doctors diagnosed him with an extremely rare genetic disorder discovered just seven years prior: Fatal Familial Insomnia.

Michael Corke died in hospital after six months without any sleep.

Fatal Familial Insomnia

FFI is so rare that only 40 families worldwide have been identified as carrying the defective gene. If only one parent has the gene, the offspring has a 50% chance of inheriting and developing the disease.

It strikes between the ages of 30 and 60 years, with no apparent trigger that the sufferer can relate to. Patients have been known to survive for up to three years, gradually passing through four stages of illness:

  1. Increasing insomnia, which can create panic attacks and unfounded fears or phobias. This can last for four months.
  2. Panic attacks worsen and hallucinations are experienced, lasting up to five months.
  3. The complete inability to sleep is followed by rapid weight loss, over three months.
  4. Dementia and unresponsiveness set in over a period of six months. The patient will eventually die.

Cause and Treatment

Ten years ago, scientists discovered that FFI is caused by a dual mutation in a gene that codes for proteins. It creates an insoluble protein that causes plaque to develop in the thalamus – a region of the brain responsible for the regulation of sleep, as well as sensory and motor systems.

As the plaque builds up and cancels the brain's ability to shut down at night, the disease manifests in the form of insomnia. The resulting symptoms are caused by the complete lack of sleep, proving that sleep is vital to us all.

FFI has been linked with other gene disorders like Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE – or mad cow disease) as well as wasting diseases in deer and elk. It may also be linked to Kuru (the laughing disease) at the gene level.

There is currently no known cure for FFI. Sleeping pills have no effect on sufferers, although there is hope that it will one day be controlled through gene therapy.
